In order to learn what yoga is, you should first know what it is. What's yoga, then?

Yoga has been present for over three thousand years and was born in India. Yoga derives from "yuj" in Sanskrit, which meaning to bind, to connect together and to link together. This also means "uniting, focusing, using and applying one's attention."

In other words, Yoga focuses on your mind and body, so that you are bound to God.

It is to discipline yourself to balance your mind, soul and emotions, in such a way that you can connect to your own spirit or jivatma, which is part of the Supreme Universal Spirit or Paramatma, known as God.


It's about concentrating your energy on building channels. And the name of a person who follows the lessons of yoga is referred to as a yogi.

There are many sorts of yoga in fact; it is not only a phrase for the practise that we are talking about. One of these things can be described as yoga:


Karma Yoga – focuses on the self-giving, without any recompense

Gentle yoga, often also dubbed by the generic label 'hatha yoga,' is contentious in the use of 'hatha,' although some people think that only physical yogas are to use the concept of generality, while others colloquially use this to refer to the gentler type.

The Sanskrit phrase Vinyasa is known as Power Yoga (a Vinyasa is a series of quick movements that warm up the body throughout). This is a very actively used kind of yoga in which a person goes fast across the positions (called "Asanas").

You will almost always sweat in it; it is not for the faintness of the heart and it offers the muscles a true strain.


You must put your entire attitude and mind into it in order to learn yoga. This isn't a gym where you can only walk if you feel overweight already.


The spiritual well being of Yoga is far greater than the physical health.
